Privacy Policy
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Stranj is an anonymous chat service operated by Tetaya Software. It is available on the web at stranj.tetaya.com and as the Stranj app for Android. This policy describes the same behaviour for both clients.
Stranj has no accounts, no email or phone sign-up, no password, no advertising, and no analytics or tracking SDKs. Chat messages are encrypted on your device before they are sent, so the server relays ciphertext rather than readable conversations.
Information the service processes
- Nickname, gender group, and age group. You choose a nickname and select an age group (18+ or 24+). These are shown to other people in the room and are held in the server's memory while you are connected.
- Anonymous identity. Each installation generates a random identifier and an encryption key pair on the device. The identifier is not linked to your name, email address, or phone number.
- Message content. Messages are encrypted on the sending device. The server relays the encrypted payload, the recipient envelopes, public keys, and delivery metadata. The General room history is kept in memory and is not written to a persistent message archive.
- Presence data. Who is currently online, typing indicators, and read receipts are transient and disappear when you disconnect.
- Blocks and reserved nicknames. Block relationships and free nickname reservations are stored on the server, keyed by the anonymous identity identifier, so they survive a reconnect.
- Moderation records. Reports, warnings, strikes, and temporary restrictions are stored so that repeat abuse can be addressed. These records are associated with the anonymous identity, not with a personal profile.
- Technical connection data. IP addresses are used for rate limiting, abuse prevention, and moderation. They are not kept in a chat log, but when an abuse rule is triggered the address, the anonymous identity, and the nickname used are written to the moderation database (for example, a 24-hour ban after repeated profanity). Those records are kept only while they are needed for abuse prevention.
Information stored on your device
- Your encryption key pair, session token, and device proof are kept in the platform secure store (Android Keystore-backed storage or the iOS Keychain). Older installs that stored key material in plain preferences are migrated into secure storage on upgrade; key material that cannot be secured is discarded rather than left readable.
- App preferences such as your chosen nickname, theme, screenshot protection, privacy shield, and biometric lock setting are stored in the app's private storage.
- Browsers that use the web client keep the same key material in browser local storage.
What Stranj does not do
- No advertising identifiers, no ad networks, and no in-app purchases.
- No third-party analytics, attribution, or crash-reporting SDKs.
- No access to your camera, photos, contacts, or location.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of data with data brokers.
- No plaintext copies of your private conversations on the server.
Encryption and its limits
Private chats are encrypted between the two participating devices, and General room messages are encrypted on the sending device. Public keys are exchanged through the server on a trust-on-first-use basis, so the server cannot read message bodies but could substitute a public key. If you need stronger guarantees, verify key fingerprints out of band.
Anything posted in General is visible to everyone currently in the room.
Retention and deletion
- Room state, presence, typing indicators, and private chat sessions are held in memory and end when the participants disconnect.
- Block relationships, reserved nicknames, and moderation records persist until they are removed or no longer needed for abuse prevention.
- Uninstalling the app removes locally stored keys, tokens, and preferences. Leaving the room ends the session.
Children
Stranj is intended for adults aged 18 and over. It is not directed to children, and age groups below 18 are not offered.
Your choices
- Change your nickname or leave the room at any time.
- Block or report another user from the People list.
- Turn on screenshot protection, the app-switcher privacy shield, or biometric lock.
- Request deletion of data associated with your anonymous session by writing to stranj-support@zango.tetaya.com.
